In Australia, today marks the 10 year anniversary of the embarrassment that was the Cronulla Riots. I am only aware of this milestone that shouldn’t be commemorated but should be commiserated because the Australian Press reported that some loser wanted to organise a rally and memorial parade to “celebrate Australian Culture” in Cronulla to mark the occasion.
Thankfully the supreme court has ruled and blocked the parade from happening.
WTF is wrong with people? In the words of Kamahl, “Why are people so unkind?
In contrast, this week Canada started to welcome 25,000 refugees from Syria. Originally the newly formed Canadian Government had planned for the refugees to arrive before the end of this year however due to the logistics involved the process should be completed by March.
Last night the first charter plane filled with refugees arrived at Pearson International Airport in Toronto. They were greeted by Hot Stuff Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (Hello Justin, why didn’t you come and meet me when we arrived at the airport???) given warm winter coats, boots and care packages.
Hot Stuff’s message:
“They step off the plane as refugees, but they walk out of this terminal as permanent residents of Canada with social insurance numbers, with health cards and with an opportunity to become full Canadians.”
“This is something that we are able to do in this country because we define a Canadian not by a skin colour or a language or a religion or a background, but by a shared set of values, aspirations, hopes and dreams that not just Canadians but people around the world share.”
And this my friends is why I love this country !!! They may be shit drivers however they are welcoming, caring and a kind people.
Alas, it’s not all Rainbows and Unicorns and not every single Canadian agrees or welcomes the refugees. The media does report this as well, however, the difference between the Australian media and the Canadian media I hear you ask??? In Australia I find the media can be a bit of a dog with a bone in regards to a story and really focus on only the negative, sometimes creating fear in Joe general public. Trial by media – A great example of this is the ousting of one prime minister after another, 4 in 5 years all spurred on by the media frenzy.
In Canada, the media has reported on the Canadian’s that don’t want to accept the refugees and the reasons why but then they report on the positive story’s, the volunteers, the donations that have been received, the stories of the refugees and what they have been through. These news story’s take up more of the airwaves than the negative. When watching you can’t help but get caught up in the buzz and you really want these new residents to feel welcome and for it to all work out for them. I feel that if this was news in Australia the Australian media would be focusing on hate and a negative spin on the story. Creating a culture of more fear and hate. A vicious cycle.
Being a new Immigrate myself I say, Bienvenue au Canada/Welcome to Canada just as I was made to feel welcome. Our son has been made to feel very welcome at his new school and my husband has been made to feel welcome at his new job. It all leaves me with a soft and fuzzy feeling and you know what? Soft and Fuzzy is good, it’s better than bitter and twisted!
Immigration is a tricky topic and doesn’t have a black or white solution, however, this little expat having been made welcome in Canada will be paying it forward.
